RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — A student organization on the Nevada campus is ramping up a program to give students and the community an opportunity to use the great outdoors as a key to maintain sobriety.
Nevada Recovery and Prevention or “NRAP” is nestled in the middle of the UNR campus.
It’s a place where students in drug or alcohol recovery or those just wanting a sober college experience can come for friendship, support, and mentoring.
NRAP is a student organization at the University of Nevada, Reno which provides peer support for students in recovery and choosing a sober lifestyle. On Saturday, September 30, at Idlewild Park, NRAP will host their third annual R5K Recovery Run/Walk and Celebration to promote community health and wellness, celebrate individuals in recovery, and reduce the stigma often associated with people with substance use related issues.
This September marks the 34th year of National Recovery Month. The goal of National Recovery Month is to raise awareness that hope and healing from mental health and substance use problems are real and possible. It highlights the availability of evidence-based treatment and recovery support services, celebrates the nation's strong recovery community, recognizes the commitment of service providers and communities that make recovery possible, and demonstrates the national recovery community’s dedication.
As part of National Prevention Week (NPW)’s new Storytelling Series, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and LMSvoice is launching Disrupting the Narrative, a nationwide storytelling challenge just for young adults and adults working with youth-serving organizations. This is an exciting opportunity to collaborate with an award-winning professional storyteller and have your story featured during a national Mobilize Recovery 2023 event in Washington, D.C. Mobilize Recovery features Grammy award winning artist Macklemore this year!
By sponsoring this year's R5k, you will be helping us in our goal to normalize and highlight recovery in the Reno/Sparks community. Your financial contribution will help support students who identify as being in recovery or those students choosing a substance-free lifestyle have a positive experience while attending the University and strengthen NRAP’s ability to change the stigma associated with non-substance use on our college campuses.
International Overdose Awareness Day remembers those lost to overdose, acknowledges the grief loved ones left behind, reduces the stigma of drug related deaths, and reduces the impact of overdose. Join us in honoring those who have been lost to drug overdose on August 26th from 2pm-6pm.
