Disrupting the Narrative: Stories of Hope and Transformation
A New Storytelling Challenge for Young Adults
As part of National Prevention Week (NPW)’s new Storytelling Series, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and LMSvoice is launching Disrupting the Narrative, a nationwide storytelling challenge just for young adults and adults working with youth-serving organizations. This is an exciting opportunity to collaborate with an award-winning professional storyteller and have your story featured during a national Mobilize Recovery 2023 event in Washington, D.C. Mobilize Recovery features Grammy award winning artist Macklemore this year!
Disrupting the Narrative aspires to highlight real-life experiences of those who triumph over the challenges of substance misuse, and how story and creativity is used to be a part of something bigger.
Storytelling has the power to establish meaningful connections, inspire positive personal and community change, and pave the way for a healthier future. This storytelling challenge encourages participants to craft authentic, detailed, and intentional stories that engage audiences and effectively convey the importance of a healthy lifestyle. In doing so, we hope to disrupt the harmful stigma surrounding these issues and transform our collective understanding and response.
How to Participate
- Submit your story – in written or video format – focused on overcoming or preventing substance misuse, promoting mental health and wellness, suicide prevention, enhancing the prevention workforce, or community-led prevention efforts.
- Written narrative submissions must not exceed 500 words, and video narrative submissions must not be longer than 2 minutes. Review all rules and entry requirements.
- All entries must be submitted by August 4, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. ET.
SAMHSA will select eight storytellers to work with award-winning storyteller Joseph Green to refine their narratives. Chosen participants will present their stories at a special Mobilize Recovery 2023 event in Washington, D.C., on Monday, September 18, 2023. Transportation and lodging will be covered, and participants will receive a day pass to attend all Mobilize Recovery 2023 activities on Monday.
Your voice has the power to transform perceptions, inspire others, and influence positive change. We invite you to share your authentic narrative and contribute to the disruption of societal stigma. We eagerly anticipate hearing your story!
